Fifteen Governors Ask U.S. Census Bureau to Furnish Data for Redistricting Before August

Fifteen Governors have signed a letter to the U.S. Census Bureau, saying the Bureau must release data needed for redistricting sooner than August. The Census Bureau has promised the data by mid-August. See this story.

One of the signers is Texas Governor Greg Abbott. Texas has a 2022 primary in March. In the past Texas has agreed to a later primary date, and there seems to be no reason why Texas shouldn’t move its primary to a later date than March. Illinois, which usually has a primary in March, has moved its 2022 primary to June.

  1. A good time for states to consider asking Congress to authorize electing Reps at-large with some alternative method of voting, such as ranked choice, approval or cumulative voting. Then, there is no need for redistricting.
