British News Story Says Labour Party is Now Very Supportive of Ending “First Past the Post”

LabourList has this article which says that the Labour Party is now very supportive of ending “First Past the Post”, which is the common British term for the type of system that the United States, Great Britain, and Canada use…single-member districts, with whichever candidate getting the most votes being elected.

LabourList is considered one of the four biggest political blogs in Great Britain. It has existed since 2009. The story is by Joe Sousek, national coordinator of Labour for a New Democracy.

In the past, the Labour Party has been an opponent of changing the system. The Liberal Democratic Party has been Britain’s chief advocate for a change. Thanks to Fairvote for the link.

  1. Simple PR –

TOTAL VOTES / TOTAL MEMBERS = EQUAL VOTES TO ELECT EACH MEMBER.

NON-TROLL MORONS CAN DO THE DETAIL MATH – WINNERS SURPLUS / LOSERS

  2. Brit gerrymanders – late 1200s – formation of olde English House of Commons —

GIANT advance for freedom against olde monarch/oligarch nobles.

NOW – a tool of the New Age Brit monarchs/oligarchs — top party hacks in the regime.

DISASTER FAILURE of Brit Lib Dems to demand PR when they were in coalition with Cons.

PR = END of Brit monarchy >>> Charles III = LAST king of England ???

See republic folks in the UK.

  3. As the Labour Party loses more and more votes to the Scottish Nationalists, and the Liberal Democrats, they suddenly realize that plurality voting no longer works for them. But, they had better hurry before those other parties realize that they don’t need the Labour Party, and don’t even bother to vote Labour as #2.

  4. I will believe this when I see it – the Labour Party has hinted at this many times to encourage LD to vote tactically for them. However, the rise of the SNP makes it very hard for Labour to govern alone so really only the Cons (and possibly SNP) have any reason to back FPTP.

However, Labour may well offer PR in local elections to get the LDs on side. It already exists for the Scottish, Welsh and London Assemblies, as well as Scottish local councils. That seems very likely.

  5. So they’ll be officially announcing that they’re circling the drain? Or is this more of a rumour?

  6. Also combined total failure of Labs and Lib Dems to jointly enact PR when Cons were a gerrymander minority.
