On April 3, the California Secretary of State notified the county elections officials that No Labels is about to conduct a registration drive so as to become a qualified party. It will need about 75,000 registered members. The exact requirement can’t be known because the law required .33% of the registered voters as of the time it qualifies, and of course the number of registered voters in the state is constantly changing.
Dead body, I presume?
Both major parties are terrified of the prospect of a significant third-party Presidential candidate for 3 reasons:
1. Plurality voting can result in a spoiler result, particularly in the critical swing states.
2. Both major parties run such lousy candidates for President that the best argument that each can make for their guy is that he is “not the other guy.”
3. The Presidency itself has become so damn powerful that neither party can tolerate not having it.
IF primaries look like Trump v Biden, “No Labels” will show up on ballots in all 50 states … and certainly top T. Roosevelt’s 1912 Bull Moose results, and Ross Perot’s 20% showing. And, yes, disrupt the “usual order”.
That’s what the no labels think. But actually the dimocrat fears are right. Trump will win the primary and Biden will win his . Anti Biden voters will coalesce around Trump and vice versa. In the end the anti Trump voters will be less disciplined and more of them will vote for Jamie Dimon or whoever “no” label runs.
By that time Dimon or whoever will scramble to be removed from ballots, in most cases with no success. They’ll lose their more plugged in supporters, and keep enough votes to cement a Trump victory, which was exactly what they did not want. But, too late, they went and did it. And that’s a good thing!
