Mississippi Bill to Restore the Statewide Initiative Process

Mississippi State Senator Jeremy England has again introduced a bill to restore the initiative process. SC 518 would require a petition signed by 10% of the registered voters. One year would be allowed to collect the signatures.

    Mississippi does not have a statutory initiative or referendum, but does have a constitution initiative. However, that provision is inoperative due to distribution requirement.

    SC 518 is a proposed constitutional amendment that would add statutory initiative and referendum to the constitution. The current provision for constitutional initiative would remain and continue to be inoperative.

    The signature requirement is likely more severe, since it is 10% of registered voters rather than 12% of gubernatorial voters. It limits signatures in any congressional district to 1/3 of the total.
