Today, the US Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision that Louisiana put too much emphasis on race in drawing a US House districts map that included a second Majority Minority district. The decision has national implications and is thought to further weaken the Voting Rights Act. Here is the Opinion in Louisiana v Callais, 24-109.
Here is a story from CBS News.
Here is an analysis from Rick Hasen, election law professor and founder of the ElectionLawBlog.
As a result of this decision and some other decisions, we now have a national interpretation that it is constitutional for state legislatures to favor one particular party when they draw districts. Yet it is unconstitutional for legislatures to draw districts to enable racial and ethnic minorities to win a number of seats in proportion to their share of the electorate.

Awesome!

Two FAKE NEWS sites.
States should be permitted to create multi-member districts. This would give the voters some actual power to “apportion” their states with their own votes.
But it would take away personal 1 on 1 constituent services and allow politicians to pass the buck and point fingers as to why those matters fall through the cracks.

🚨 JUST IN: The Florida House has OVERWHELMINGLY PASSED Governor Ron DeSantis’ new Congressional maps, which would add up to 4 new Republican US House seats, 83-28
Democrats literally started SCREAMING when it passed 🤣
It now moves on to the Senate.
Keep pushing! 🔥
You can literally hear the Democrats screaming and crying in that video as the vote is being cast
The Supreme Court struck down race-based redistricting THIS MORNING. Democrats in Louisiana have spent decades carving out special districts for majority-black populations because the black population overwhelmingly supports Democrats.
This tactic has been employed in dozens of states to varying degrees, but as of Wednesday, all of that is going to be challenged.
Within an hour of that SCOTUS decision, Florida passed the map presented by Governor DeSantis earlier this week in anticipation of the ruling. They didn’t even wait for the ink to dry on Alito’s masterpiece before they got to work!
Republican politicians might be a little slow in the head and a bit lacking in testicular fortitude, but even they realize the opportunity before them.
Part 3 (final)
(SEE MORE TWEETS AT THE NOT THE BEE STORY WE ARE MOT ALLOWED TO LINK HERE)
To add insult to injury, Virginia courts, including the Supreme Court, have ordered the Democrats’ new gerrymandered map to be paused due to a number of legal challenges and constitutional problems.
Unlike Florida, which is aiming to better represent its populace after an influx of many new people, most of them conservative-leaning, Virginia carved up the state to purposely disenfranchise Republican voters.
While both sides of the political aisle are guilty of this, Democrats have turned it into an art form. Consider New England, where 40% of the population essentially has had no representation in Congress for decades.
Red states: This isn’t hard. Get it done!
By “Democrats” Harris Rigby means demon rats.

Do you believe it should be legal for legislatures to draw districts to enable racial majorities to win a number of seats in proportion to their share of the population?
Are people of Anglo-Saxon heritage a majority in the US anymore?
Why should it be more legal, or constitutional, to discriminate on the basis of ethnicity or race , than on the basis of political party preference?
Which part of the US Constitution says that?
But it would take away personal 1 on 1 constituent services and allow politicians to pass the buck and point fingers as to why those matters fall through the cracks.
* this is why proportional representation and multi member districts are a very bad idea.
“more blank checks to have more pack/crack minority rule gerrymanders”
That’s precisely the opposite of what the court ruled.

Supreme Court tosses Louisiana’s race-based congressional map
Harris Rigby
Big news from the frontlines of the redistricting war.
The Supreme Court just took a hammer to race-based gerrymandering.
Hey, would you look at that?
Finally, a decision where all of the “conservative” justices ended up on the same side of an issue.
From Fox News:
The 6-3 ruling narrows how states can consider race when drawing maps, a shift that could affect minority representation in multiple states and trigger a new wave of legal challenges over congressional boundaries.
The decision maintains the current legal standard for redistricting disputes nationwide, likely sustaining existing maps in several states and shaping how future challenges unfold in federal courts.
Here’s a portion of Alito’s opinion, which was joined by Barrett, Kavanaugh, Roberts, and Thomas.
These and other problems convinced us that the time had come to resolve whether compliance with the Voting Rights Act can indeed provide a compelling reason for race-based districting. We now answer that question: Compliance with §2, as properly construed, can provide such a reason. Correctly understood, §2 does not impose liability at odds with the Constitution, and it should not have imposed liability on Louisiana for its 2022 map. Compliance with §2 thus could not justify the State’s use of race-based redistricting here. The State’s attempt to satisfy the Middle District’s ruling, although understandable, was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, and we therefore affirm the decision below.
A ruling that will be used to decide future cases around race-based gerrymandering.
Here’s a portion of Justice Thomas’s concurrence:
I join the Court’s opinion in full. This Court should never have interpreted §2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to effectively give racial groups ‘an entitlement to roughly proportional representation.’ …
By doing so, the Court led legislatures and courts to ‘systematically divid[e] the country into electoral districts along racial lines.’ Holder v. Hall, 512 U. S. 874, 905 (1994) (THOMAS, J., concurring in judgment). ‘Blacks [we]re drawn into ‘black districts’ and given ‘black representatives’; Hispanics [we]re drawn into Hispanic districts and given ‘Hispanic representatives’; and so on.’ Ibid. That interpretation rendered §2 ‘repugnant to any nation that strives for the ideal of a color-blind Constitution.’ Id., at 905 – 906. Today’s decision should largely put an end to this ‘disastrous misadventure’ in voting-rights jurisprudence.
Now we wait for libs’ heads to explode!

DeSantis announces new Florida map that would wipe out Virginia’s gerrymandering gains
Harris Rigby
Florida Ws
DeSantis FTW
Redistricting
What’s the phrase? “Turnabout is fair play”?
Or maybe “All’s fair in love and war” might be more appropriate here.
That, my dear friends, is how you play the game.
That’s four teeny, tiny blue districts in metropolitan areas, surrounded by deep red rural districts throughout the rest of the state.
More from the Washington Examiner:
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) unveiled a new congressional map in an effort to draw out four Democratic House seats less than a week after Virginia passed a referendum to draw out four GOP seats.
Under the new proposal, only four seats out of 28 would lean in favor of Democrats, according to the draft proposal.
The Republican-controlled legislature will meet next week to debate the measure. It would then go to DeSantis‘ desk to be signed.
Unlike Virginia, which arguably used unlawful methods to pass their measure, asked voters a weird, verbally rigged question when asked to approve the measure, and specifically did so as a form of revenge against the Trump admin, DeSantis says the move is meant to better reflect Florida’s populace.
Florida got shortchanged in the 2020 Census, and we’ve been fighting for fair representation ever since. Our population has since grown dramatically, and we have moved from a Democrat majority to a 1.5 million Republican advantage.
I can’t wait to see how Democrats say Virginia’s map, which takes a state that’s only +5% Democrat (because of DC), is more fair than Florida’s when Florida’s map actually reflects how the state votes.
So many red states could do this same thing.
(Looking at the Republicans in Indiana!)
