U.S. District Court Delays Ohio Challenge to U.S. House Districting for Sixty Days

On January 12, U.S. District Court Judge John Adams issued a 60-day stay in the Ohio lawsuit against the new U.S. House district boundaries. Simon v DeWine, n.d., 4:21cv-2267. The three-page order says it would be more efficient to see what happens with state court lawsuits against the legislative districting plan. The plaintiffs in the Simon case argue that both the U.S. House districts and the new legislative districts injure African-American voters.

The 2022 Ohio primary is in May.

Federal Lawsuit Filed to Overturn New Georgia Campaign Finance Law that Gives Incumbent Governors a Special Advantage

On January 6, a lawsuit was filed in federal court against a new Georgia campaign finance law that permits the incumbent governor to raise unlimited campaign funds, whereas all other gubernatorial candidates running against him or her are subject to limits. Republican Party Threatens to Cut Ties with Presidential Debate Commission

According to this New York Times story, the Republican National Committee will decide at its February meeting whether to pass a rule, requiring its presidential nominee to boycott presidential debates sponsored by the Presidential Debate Commission. Georgia Libertarian Party Intends to Ask for Rehearing en Banc in Ballot Access Case

As previously reported, on January 5, the Eleventh Circuit reversed the lower court and upheld the Georgia 5% petition requirement for U.S. House, even though it has existed since 1943 and no minor party candidate has ever managed to comply with the law. On January 12, the party filed a motion with the Eleventh Circuit, asking for a time extension to file for a rehearing before all the full-time judges of the Eleventh circuit. The state does not oppose the time extension. UPDATE: on February 13 the time extension was granted. The new deadline is February 23.
