The U.S. Supreme Court had asked New York to respond in Upstate Jobs Party v Kosinski, 24-503, by December 20. But the state then requested and obtained an extension until January 21, 2025. This is the case over whether the Constitution forbids the state from letting individuals donate more campaign donations to the nominee of a qualified party than to the nominee of an unqualified party.
Although not all the votes for president have been counted, virtually all of them have been. The number of voters who cast a vote for president for someone other than Donald Trump or Kamala Harris has risen to a hair less than 2.0%. As of ten days ago it was at 1.90%.
As more votes have been counted, the margin between Trump and Harris has shrunk to 1.55%. As of ten days ago, it had been 1.62%.
The Maryland State Board of Elections has tallied the write-ins for the declared presidential write-in candidates. Among the candidates who were on the ballot in at least one state, they are: Claudia De la Cruz 1,136; Peter Sonski 1,012; Cornel West 918; Shiva Ayyadurai 31; Joseph Kishore 12.
In 2020, the American Solidarity Party received 795 write-ins for president in Maryland, and the Party for Socialism & Liberation received 125. Thanks to Tony Roza fhr the link.
Economics Professor Darren Grant has a new article in Social Science Quarterly, December 2024, titled “Prevailing Party Laws & General Election Outcomes.” It finds that the order of candidates influences voting behavior, and estimates that 2% of the voters are influenced by ballot order. Here is a link to a description of his paper.
He has written about ballot order before, including a 2017 article, “The Ballot Order Effect is Huge: Evidence from Texas.”
The Florida Secretary of State has released write-in totals for the declared write-in presidential candidates. The only candidate who had write-in status, and who was on the ballot in at least one state, was Shiva Ayyadurai. He received 199.
Cornel West probably would have filed for write-in status, but he expected to be on the ballot as the Natural Law nominee. However his papework was faulty, and by the time that was apparent, it was too late to file as a write-in.
