Arold Mathews is a Republican attorney in Bibb County, Alabama, who wanted to run for District Judge in this year’s Republican primary. The party is refusing to let him run because in 2018, he contributed $500 to someone who was running for office as a Democrat. See this story.
Mathews will attempt to qualify as an independent candidate.
On January 12, U.S. District Court Judge Matthew L. Garcia, a Biden appointee, dismissed the lawsuit Castro v Toulouse Oliver, 1:23cv-766. This is one of the lawsuits filed by John Anthony Castro to keep former President Donald Trump off the ballot in various Republican presidential primaries.
The ruling says Castro’s campaign is too feeble to give him standing. See it here.
On January 13, Taiwan held a presidential election. See the wikipedia article, which shows that three candidates were on the ballot and the winner, Lai Ching-te, won with 40%. One of his opponents received 33% and one received 26%. There is no provision for a run-off.
On January 2, an individual broke into the Colorado state courts building, which houses the Colorado Supreme Court. He did $35,000,000 worth of damage. See this story. The story quotes the Chief Justice as saying he doubts the attack is related to the December 19, 2023, decision in Anderson v Griswold, the Trump ballot access case.
