Illinois Legislature Will Ponder Special Election for U.S. Senate Vacancy

The outgoing members of the Illinois legislature will be in session again starting December 15. It is very likely that a bill will be introduced to provide for a special election to fill U.S. Senate vacancies. If such a bill passes, the most likely date for such a special election will be in April 2009.

  1. Interesting to see how such a special election will operate in terms of nominations, ballot access, debates, etc.

  2. Obvious remedy — have candidates file a rank order list of his/her replacement.

i.e. NO more rotted low voter turnout special elections.

  3. Congress should require that all States, and in particular Illinois, New York, and Delaware hold special elections in a timely fashion to fill vacancies.

It is totally corrupt that senators can time their seats becoming vacant in order that a governor can make a long- term appointment.

Special elections should be held within 60 days of the date of a vacancy, unless it is within 90 days of a general election, in which case the special election can be deferred to the date of the general election. If the vacancy is within 90 days of the last general election in a term, then the general election will serve as an election for the remainder of the term, plus the full term.

  4. Looks like there have been more fake Mr. Reality posts. For the record, here’s my real opinion:

Gov. Blagojevich was elected by the people.
President-elect Obama was elected by the people.

The Illinois state constitution does not mention “selling a Senate seat”.
The US Constitution does not mention “birth certificates”.

The voters of Illinois wanted Blagojevich to serve.
The voters of the US wanted Obama to serve.

    So let them both serve.

  5. Why a special election? Just let the Illinois Legislature elect a replacement like the Founders originally set forth in the U.S. Constitution.

  6. Mr. Reality: All ballots are provisional and counted at the discretion of the vote counters who are Democrats and Republicans. In fair and free elections who knows what the outcomes would be. American elections are a sham by international standards.
