Associated Press Story About New York Election Law Proposal Quotes Leaders of Independence, Conservative, and Green Parties

This AP story about New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to repeal the Wilson-Pakula law has quotations about the idea from leaders of the Conservative Party, the Independence Party, and the Green Party. All favor the existing law and oppose the Governor’s idea.

The title of the article is somewhat misleading. The Wilson-Pakula law was passed in 1947 to curtail the power of U.S. Congressman Vito Marcantonio, who kept winning major party primaries even though he was sympathetic to the views of the Communist Party. The change was not about a generic attempt to stop socialists or communists.

  1. Wilson-Pakula being tossed would be a major loss for Frank McKay. There is no better reason to root for it being gotten rid of.

  2. Richard,
While this particular law may have been targeted directly Vito Marcantonio, it was part of a larger strategy to remove the entire left from New York politics. It was in 1947 that their 4th effort to get rid of proportional elections from New York City finally succeeded as well. The Dems (with the occasional liberal Republican Mayor) have had a free ride ever since.

  3. #3, not entirely. In 1950 New York city voters elected Impelliteri, who ran only as an independent, without the support of any qualified party. And in 1969 Lindsay was re-elected with the nomination of only one qualified party, the Liberal Party.

  4. Everyone, the Small Business Administration Ministry developed rapidly today.

If anyone has an inclination towards this kind of project you can vote for your own name and probably get elected since they’ve elected eleven names and it seems like they’ll be settling on twelve. Good job Benjamin Meiklejohn [Green Independent], well written, and great improvement for that Ministry over the past 24 hours:

  5. In 2013, the IPNYC is giving its Wilson-Pakula to Adolfo Carrion for mayor, which will make him the first candidate to be on the ballot in November.

  6. The IPNYC would support the elimination of the requirement for Wilson-Pakula authorization to run in MAJOR party primaries. This would do away with the gatekeepers that Senator Smith is alleged to have bribed to gain entrance into the Republican Party primary, and maintain the protection that minor parties need. A minor party candidate could not overwhelm a major party, while the reverse would be the likely outcome, if minor parties lost their right to issue Wilson-Pakulas.

  7. Richard,

You did not mention the alleged bribery scandal with State Sen. Smith. W-P tempts bribery.

  8. Richard,

    Paragraph 10.

    1. Isn’t that what happened with Rudy Giuliani in 1993 with the Liberal Party? The head-I forgot his name-got juicy government jobs for his family. Many in NYC will never vote for a Republican. In 1933, Mayor LaGuardia had a fusion line also.

    2. Can’t major parties register/raid minor parties with or without W-P?

    3. If bribes are true, State Sen Smith run in the Dem. primary and do the best he can.
