The article is kind of repulsive, but I will say that something similar happened where I live last year.
I live in a Democratic city in a Democratic state. We had an election for Mayor where the incumbent got primaried, and the Republican actually dropped out to support a stronger and more well-known independent candidate, who narrowly lost the two-way election.
