Thanks, Tennessee General Assembly! Memphis Mayor Elected with 28% of the Vote.

On October 5, 2023, a new Mayor (Paul Young) was elected in Memphis, Tennessee. There were 17 candidates in the race, and Mr. Young was the top vote-getter, receiving 28% of the vote. Since 2008, Memphis voters have approved Ranked Choice Voting, rejected the repeal of RCV in a referendum, and rejected an amendment to the City Charter that would have mandated Plurality Voting.

Nonetheless, Plurality Voting was used in this election, because Ranked Choice Voting has been banned in The Volunteer State by the Tennessee General Assembly, which is dominated by the Republican Party.

Here is the story from FairVote.

I posted earlier this week about a paper from the American Enterprise Institute asserting that conservatives should more carefully consider electoral reforms. Here is the link to that study.

  1. David Brudnoy, the last conservative radio host st WBZ, used to call the Republicans the “Stupid Party” because they couldn’t see what is in their own best interest.

  2. In Texas, larger cities are required to elect by majority.

No wonder David Crockett and Sam Houston left Tennessee.

  3. CIVIL WAR II TO START IN MINORITY RULE TN ???

    PR — LEGIS

    APPV — NONPARTISAN EXECS/JUDICS

    — PENDING CONDORCET — RCV DONE RIGHT.

  4. Was this partisan? What party does the guy belong to? How many candidates were there? From which parties? How well did his party do overall…

  5. Tennessee Lege rejecting plurality voting next? And, Jim Riley maybe supports Paxton impeachment trial voting?

  6. TROLL MORONS LOVE UN-EQUAL BALLOT ACCESS LAWS, MINORITY RULE GERRYMANDERS AND MAJOR SOP VIOLATIONS–

IT KEEPS THEM STUCK IN TROLL MORON PRE-SKOOOOL CIVICS 666 — UNABLE TO MAKE IT TO KINDERGARTEN.

  7. I agree with Jody, and I’m not in any kind of government or interested in being in government.

  8. @Gato de Pallas… Technically a non-partisan election. The winner is a known Democrat though. There were 17 candidates. Most candidates were independents, a few Democrats, 1 Republican (who was a former Democrat).

  9. The Republican Tennessee General Assembly would rather Memphis choose its mayor through a Democratic primary, so that Republicans have even less control over who wins. LOL!
To be fair, I read that Tennessee has open primaries.

Both ranked choice voting and approval voting would give Republicans and independents more say over who wins in Memphis. But, it would give Democrats and independents more say in other parts of the state. Which kinds of people can’t swallow that?

  10. Republicans and independents would never have any real say in who wins in Memphis. For that to happen you would need major demographic changes, an end to Negro voting, or a much larger percentage of negroes voting Republican.

  11. WHAT PERCENT OF TOTAL VOTERS COULD / WOULD CORRECTLY VOTE FOR 17 IN A RCV ELECTION ???

OR EVEN IN A CONDORCET ELECTION ???

WHAT WAS BALLOT ACCESS FOR MAYOR IN THE ELECTION ???

KNOW A HACK IN THE REGIME ??? $ 1 OR LESS FEE ???
