Texas Republican Primary Ballot May Include a Referendum on Whether Texas Should Secede from the United States

Texas does not have the statewide initiative or referendum for state laws or constitutional amendments, but it does have provision for a non-binding referendum to be placed on partisan primary ballots. Section 172.088 of the Texas election code requires signatures equal to 5% of that party’s primary vote for Governor, in the last gubernatorial primary. Currently for Republicans, that requires 97,709 signatures.

A group has been circulating a referendum petition intended for the March 2024 Republican primary ballot, that asks if Texas should secede from the U.S. The petition deadline is December 1. It is not clear if the group got enough signatures, but even if they didn’t, the state party committee could also vote to put that referendum on the Texas Republican primary ballot.   1. Letting parties put non-binding referenda on primary ballots is an interesting idea. Do any other states permit this?

  3. The referenda have no effect. Even if the question gets on the ballot and a majority of voters in the primary support it, Texas won’t actually be any closer to seceding again in the real world.

  28. the legislature can only put a binding reso on the ballot if they vote and pass it with 2/3 vote in both chambers, plus there are too many republican members who think the idea of seceding is nonsense, which is one thing they’re right about. The people wouldn’t vote for that shit anyways. A non bindng reso on a republican primary ballot is irrelevant considering most republicans don’t vote in primaries.
