On July 24, a Republican Maine legislator asked the Secretary of State to rule that Troy Jackson, the new Democratic U.S. Senate nominee, is ineligible. See this story. Jackson ran for Governor in the June 2026 Democratic primary and lost. The legislator argues that therefore he can’t run for U.S. Senate.
I hope he is ineligible.

The law is clearly an attempt to stop people from running for two offices simultaneously and does not apply here. South Carolina has a similar law and a similar situation: candidates who lost the Republican primary for governor are now running for U.S. senator due to the similar need to replace the primary winner who passed away. The situations are completely the same.

The legislature is misreading (or misconstruing) the statute. The statute prevents a candidate filing for multiple offices at the same election (in this case the primary). That does not make the person unqualified for another office.
If Maine had an Open Primary this would not be a problem, since Platner would never have been nominated. He could have stayed on the ballot like Eric Swalwell did in California.
