The Yankee National Party was founded in 2020 to work for independence for the New England states. In 2026 it has one nominee on the ballot with the party label. Deena Steinberg is running for Connecticut State House, 12th district.
The only other party in the U.S. still in existence that favors independence for any particular state is the California National Party. It ran its state chair, Sean Forbes, for Governor in the June 2026 primary. He was not on the primary ballot but he filed as a declared write-in, and received 22 votes.
As an unreconstructed Southernor who doesn’t care to share federal voting power with the voting majorities in New England and California, I heartily endorse their calls for their states to exit the USA.
Unfortunately, past precedent from my own ancestors, as well as everything that has happened since, indicates the USA would go to any lengths to prevent their exit, ours, or anyone else’s.
I don’t see anything on the foreseeable horizon that seems likely to change that in my lifetime, or even that of people of the median national age group.
Isn’t there an ongoing effort to revive the Alaskan Independence Party?
