On August 24, Matt Althaus, the Libertarian nominee for Ohio’s 9th U.S. House district, withdrew from the November ballot. He waited until it was too late for the Libertarian Party to replace him.
In the 2026 Libertarian primary, Althaus had defeated David Gedert for the nomination. Gedert was a Libertarian activist, while Althaus was unknown to Libertarian Party leaders. See this story, which says that Althaus had in the past donated to Republican candidates, but never to Libertarian candidates.
The Libertarian primary results for this seat were: Althaus 535; Gedert 368.

This probably means Althaus is more libertarian than Gedert. How competitive is this district usually, or this year polling? Is there an incumbent? If yes, how entrenched? Which way does it usually lean?

Unlikely. If what Larry said is correct, the chance of the district switching to Republican this year are very low, this year being worse for that than most elections. Regardless of the presence or absence of an actual or nominal libertarian on the ballot.

OH 9 is demon rat Marcy Kaptur, Toledo area. She was the rep there when I lived in her was district in 1990=1. She’s still there. If there is a realistic chance to get her out, it will probably either be in
1) a redistricting year, if the redistricting is favorable to Republicans
2) a Republican wave election, such as a midterm with a Dummy Rat potus, especially in his or her second term, or a presidential year when a Republican succeeds a Femocrat as potus, such as 2o16 or 2024
A better opportunity will probably come whenever she 3)finally croaks or retires, particularly if it coincides with 1 or 2, preferably both simultaneously, but redistricting years are usually during midterms, unless redistricting more often than once a decade becomes the new normal, but otherwise coinciding 3 and 2 is more likely than 3+1, 3+2, 1+2, or 3+1+2.
2024 was a 2b. 2026 is not a 1,2, or 3, and if anything is most likely to be a -2 (D minus rat blew wave).
Kaptur seems pretty safe this year, more so than usual, unless she gets catastrophically ill suddenly, or more likely only if she actually dies, and maybe not even then.
Republican dirty tricks this year would be moronic. Not that I would put it past them, but if they paid for my advice it would be to not pull dirty tricks when they have practically zero chance of changing the outcome, even assuming that they are willing and able to pull them.

I casually note that Ginzburger’s list omits both some of the most significant minor parties, notably the Vermont Progressive Party which is actually a significant electoral party in that state, as well as Casual Observers suggestion of “rookie” Christian Liberty party.
The name of the latter would in theory appeal to me as an aspiring and highly imperfect follower of Rabbi Yeshua Christos, the living God, and a supporter of maintenance and revival of traditional English liberty, and more broadly of liberty as defined within a culturally specific, European, Christian, patriarchal tradition with roots in Greek and Roman antiquity, Judaism, Viking, Germanic and Celtic cultural tradition, etc.
However, I don’t recall having ever heard of them before. I’d guess they are not qualified for any state ballot, have never elected anyone to any office, May well have never had anyone listed on the ballot in any state with their label, and if they have it was most likely one or at best a tiny handful of candidates who performed so poorly as to be electorally historically insignificant even as “spoilers” (marginal difference maker’s), particularly for anything notable, anywhere, ever.
I’d also hazard a guess that this isn’t about to change in the foreseeable future, or far more likely ever; that they’ve also probably never run any significant write in campaigns for anything anywhere ever either; that this is also probably not going to change; that they are not a listed voter registration option in any state that has listed partisan voter Registration, and not significantly in write in voter registrations in any such state; and that they have no significant financial resources or online following of any sort, and that all such conditions are highly likely to remain permanent.
That is, they are almost likely a single person or small group of people who are at best highly delusional and at worst certified mentally ill lunatics, likely a minor and insignificant splinter of an already marginal minor party + folks too persnickety to compromise on any minor matter, driven by personality conflicts with their fellow minor party members and internal cognitive dissonance, guilt and resentment driven zealots and attention seekers with delusions of persecution and grandeur, individuals with few if any ties to sense of priority, proportionality, the art of the politically possible or probable, equanimity, forgiveness, tolerance, playing well with others, and so on.
That is, quite unlike what their name ought imply, in actual reality as opposed to theory.
But I could be wrong. That’s just a guess based on many years of various forms of observation of different minor parties and failed efforts to create new ones.

I joined the libertarians twice, 20 years apart, and it’s been nearly 20 years since the second and final time. Both times they eagerly assured me I was one of them and should join up until I did and started calling myself one, at which point they set out to assure me that I was not, never had been, and never will be a libertarian, and should go away and not come back. Both times they drove me away within a year or two.
The first time was to support Ron Paul for their nomination, the second time Bob Barr. Both of whom I supported before and after their libertarian runs when they ran and identified as Republicans.
Both times I was alienated from them by the following midterm conventions. About 15 years ago I stopped trying to figure out who the “true libertarians” are and aren’t. Clearly, not me.

Not only that, but at that Republican Party midterm convention, the Libertarian Party becoming ungovernable, anarchy symbol, chicken on a stick and other such logos and mottos were prominently displayed as Silk Road’s Ross Ulbricht, finally at long last freed from prison by Liberator Trump, spoke about how awesome President Trump is for liberty, freedom, and libertarianism.
