Connecticut State Court Removes Independent Party Nominees from the 2023 Municipal Ballot

On October 16, a Connecticut state superior court issued an opinion in Alves v Giegler, Danbury, DBD-cv-23-6047566. This was a dispute over the actual nominees of the Independent Party for several city offices in Danbury’s municipal election of November 7, 2023. There were two nominating meetings held by individuals holding themselves out as officers of the Independent Party of Danbury. One meeting cross-nominated the Republican Party’s slate and the other cross-endorsed the Democratic Party’s slate. The judge ruled that neither slate should be on the ballot.

Here is the opinion, which is somewhat humorous. Thanks to Joshua Van Vranken for the link.

2023 Parliamentary Election in Poland

Poland held a parliamentary election on October 15. In the lower house, the Sejm, seventeen parties won at least one seat. Almost all parties that won a seat are in alliance with certain other parties. Here is the wikipedia article about the election.

One of the parties that won a few seats is the Confederation of the Polish Crown, which wants to restore the monarchy.

Filing Closes for Nevada Presidential Primaries

Filing has closed for the Nevada presidential primaries. Only the Democratic and Republican Parties have presidential primaries in Nevada.

There are thirteen Democrats and seven Republicans. Here is the list.

The seven Republicans are John A. Castro, Heath Fulkerson, Nikki Haley, Donald Kjornes, Mike Pence, Tim Scott, and Hirsh Singh. Many prominent Republicans who are seeking the Republican nomination did not file for the Nevada Republican primary. This is because the primary does not actually choose any delegates. Furthermore, Nevada Republican Party rules say that anyone who files in the Republican presidential primary is not eligible to compete in the Nevada Republican caucus, which does elect delegates.

The primaries are on February 6; the Republican caucus is February 8. It seems likely that a great proportion of the Republican presidential primary voters will vote for “None of the Above”, because write-ins are not allowed and Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, and other high-profile names will be missing from the Republican primary ballot.

Louisiana Election Results

Louisiana elected its state officers on October 14. Here is a link to the election returns.

The lone Libertarian legislative candidate, Heide Alejandro-Smith, polled 9% in a three-person race, in the 90th House district.

The independent legislative candidate who did the best is Russ Wise in the 57th House district. He polled 16% in a field of eight candidates, placing third. There were also independent candidates in the 45th, 68th, and 85th House districts.

The Independent Party had two House candidates, in the 19th and 30th districts; and two State Senate candidates, in the 22nd and 37th districts. It also had gubernatorial and Lieutenant-gubernatorial candidates.

The state’s election returns show independent candidates with this designation: “(OTH)”. Independent Party candidates are labeled “INDEPENDENT.”

The Green Party is qualified in Louisiana, but it had no candidates for state office.
