George Skelton, California Politics Commentator, Says California Should Restore Write-in Space on General Election Ballots for Top-Two Offices

George Skelton, veteran politics columnist for the Los Angeles Times, writes here that California needs write-in space on general election ballots for top-two offices. He says, “No write-in candidacies are allowed in California’s general elections, although they are in the primary. That’s an inexplicable flaw.”

California allows write-ins in all presidential general elections, and non-partisan elections, and in top-two primary elections. It is only top-two general elections that ban write-ins. The ban was created in 2012.

  1. Write in spaces are a good idea, regardless. It would be even better if all voting was by standing count or voice vote, public and on the record.

BTW, there will not be two Republicans in the top two for Governor of Kalipornia. Unfortunately, the folks unlucky enough to still live there just won’t get such a generous gift from God.

  2. California should move the primary to October, and let any candidate with 10% of the vote advance to the general election, similar to the system used in France.

It is likely the expose’ of Swalwell occurred precisely because he was being seen as the sole Democrat in the general election.

  3. I like France. It’s full of surrender monkeys. You in the west should all be more like France. Just not like that French asswipe who wrote the Camp of the Saints, which was recently removed from Amazon for being too far ahead of schedule.

  4. Back in the bad old days of the USSR, they allowed “anti-votes” If a voter didn’t like the candidate listed (often there was only one, CP endorsed candidate), they could cross the name out. Supposedly, if cross outs exceeded actual votes, the nominee could be disqualified from election. I don’t know how often this actually happened, but I seem to recall reading about it during an election in the Gorbachev period.

  5. In addition to write-ins, None-of-the-Above should included on the California top-2 general election ballot. Maybe it should be called None-of-those-below so that all candidates who get fewer than the “None” votes should be disqualified from election.
