U.S. District Court Judge Enjoins Indiana Law that Won’t Allow Student ID as a Form of Identity

On April 16, U.S. District Court Judge Richard L. Young, a Clinton appointee, enjoined a 2025 Indiana law that says ID cards issued by public universities do not count as photo ID. Count Us in v Morales, s.d., 1:25cv-864. The ruling says the law violates Equal Protection. The decision notes that public university and college ID’s were accepted for twenty years, until 2025. Also the ruling notes that schools have traditionally worked with the state to insure that their ID’s meet state standards.

The state has already appealed to the Seventh Circuit, where it is case 26-1783. The appeal will move fast because the Indiana primary is May 4.

  1. I’ve gotten a college ID with zero proof of anything whatsoever at a college I wasn’t even attending. I just lived in the same town and wanted an extra ID for various things, plus discounts from various places that would give one with a college ID.

The federal judge is vastly overstepping federal authority.

The law should be enforced, and passed in every state.

  2. In Indiana, public universities and colleges have long worked with the state to make sure the school ID’s met all the state’s requirements. It had been legal to use such ID’s for twenty years, until the legislature last year changed the law.

  3. Which state standards do they meet? All the same standards as non-university IDs? Do either, both, or neither require proof of US citizenship, given that most (I think all) states issue IDs to non-citizens, and (I think all or almost all) universities have foreign students?

  4. If university IDs meet the same standards as regular state IDs, why are they issued separately?

  5. @I Wonder,

What do students at Notre Dame, (or Butler or Valparaiso) use when they vote?

Are the public schools getting kickback from vendors.

If the federal government issued ID’s, Congress could require that they be used for federal elections. When a citizen updated their address, the state election authorities could be informed, in effect a form of automatic voter registration.

  6. @ Jim Riley

What do students at Kickapoo Elementary use when they vote? How about students at Islamabad University? Beijing School for Extra Special Needs? Postmortem Next Steps Academy? COVID 19 Institute for Adaptation to Evolving Biped Countermeasures?

If the United Nations issued IDs, the U.N. general assembly could require they be used for global elections. Under the watch of peacekeeping forces from developing nations, all biolifeforms, past and potential future biolifeforms, undocumented interplanetary migrants, bots, etc, could be microchipped or electronically tagged or both, to complete track all their movements, activities, transactions, interactions, etc, so as to automatically measure and enforce perfect compliance and fair outcomes, particularly in consensus driven, mandatory participation global elections.

Your proposal is a progressive step forward, but isn’t mine an even greater leap along that same shining path to a bright and ever more perfect inevitable future paradise?

  7. Did someone say paradise? I am promised 72 virgin goats and sheep!

  8. Sorry, IFA, but they are going to have to be blow up doll sheep and goats. Our fellow living, formerly living, and potentially living beings deserve and demand full rights, equality, and restorative justice, same as we do, except for the oppressor class.

    But.

We’ll work all that out when we eliminate all their remaining power. Let’s make common cause until then for global justice and fairness.

  9. That’s the spirit! Speak your truth! Take power from the Western oppressors by any means necessary! We must achieve universal interspecies, intergalactic, interdimensional diversity, equality, inclusion, and above all fairness and justice, no matter what it takes, even if its everyone kneeling to a moon rock five times a day upon pain of public torture and beheading, or other terrible ways to suffer and die!

  10. First we take your power. Then we take your money. Then we take your females of all ages and species.

  11. Define female. That’s a discriminatory term. We all have orifices which can be penetrated or spots where they can be carved out or facsimilated in some way.

Also, “your” implies some type of discriminatory exclusivity. We must all learn to share equally, right?

I guess it’s ok as long as it takes the form of restorative justice, though. Take it all! We will help you!
