On February 18, Arkansas State Senator Jim Hendren revealed that he has changed his registration from Republican to independent. He was first elected to the legislature in 2012, and he was re-elected last year to another four-year term. See this story. Thanks to Political Wire for the link.
On February 9, the New York Assembly passed A4364. For 2021 only, it allows party meetings that are for the purpose of nominating candidates to be electronic meetings. The party calling such meetings would need to provide 72 hours advance notice to the committee members. The vote in the Assembly was 143-5. There is no companion bill in the State Senate yet.
On February 17, the Nebraska Senate Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee heard SB 76. This is the bill that would change the system for electing presidential electors. Currently Nebraska lets each U.S. House district choose its own presidential elector. The bill would convert Nebraska to a winner-take-all system, now used by 48 other states.
This newspaper story says most witnesses testified against the bill. The only witness mentioned in the story who testified for it was the Republican Party state executive director.
According to this story, Illinois officials are thinking about the problem that the March 15, 2022 primary may need to be delayed. Illinois is another state in which primary candidates need petitions to get on primary ballots.
